Do You Need First Aid Training for Your Job?
Have you ever wondered: “Is First Aid training actually required for my job?”
The short answer? Probably — or at least strongly recommended.
Across Australia, more workplaces expect staff to hold a valid First Aid certificate. In some roles, it’s even a legal requirement.

Why First Aid Training Matters at Work
Emergencies can happen on any shift — from choking and fainting to cardiac arrest or serious cuts. Being trained gives you the confidence to act when it matters most.
Many employers are legally required to ensure their workplace has trained first aiders under Safe Work Australia guidelines. That often means they’ll want you to show up already certified.
1. Childcare Workers – HLTAID012
If you work in a childcare centre, early learning service, or as an educator — yes, you’ll need specific First Aid training.
Required course: HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
- CPR for babies and children
- Anaphylaxis and asthma response
- Managing illness and injuries in children
- Emergency communication with families
This is a legal requirement under the Education and Care Services National Regulations.
2. Aged Care & Disability Support – HLTAID011
If you work in aged care, disability support, or as an NDIS carer, First Aid training is essential — ethically and often contractually.
Recommended course: HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
- CPR
- Treating wounds, burns, and fractures
- Stroke, seizure, and allergy emergencies
- Using an AED (defibrillator)
- Caring for someone in shock
This course is commonly required alongside Certificate III in Individual Support or Certificate IV in Disability.
3. Tradies & Construction Workers – HLTAID009 or HLTAID011
On-site injuries happen fast — slips, cuts, falls, or electrical accidents. First Aid training could help you save a mate’s life.
At minimum: HLTAID009 – Provide CPR
Better coverage: HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (includes treatment for a wider range of emergencies)
Holding First Aid certification may even help you win contracts or stand out when applying for jobs.
4. Teachers & School Staff – HLTAID012 or HLTAID011
Just like childcare, schools often require tailored First Aid training.
Best option: HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting (meets ACECQA requirements)
Alternate option: HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (may be acceptable for some secondary or admin roles)
